29 March 2012

PRESS RELEASE

The signing ceremony for the Grant Assistance for the Grass-roots Human Security Project entitled “The Project for Procurement of Autoclave of Mamatoto Resource and Birth Centre” took place on March 29, at Mamatoto Resource and Birth Centre (Mamatoto), Belmont. Mamatoto received a Grant of up to US$ 4,795 from the Government of Japan for the procurement of an autoclave which is to be used for sanitizing surgical equipment.

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Yoshimasa Tezuka, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and Mrs. Debrah Lewis, Executive Director, Mamatoto. Approximately twenty (20) other distinguished guests were also in attendance.

His Excellency Yoshimasa Tezuka gave a speech at the ceremony, in which he pointed out that Mamatoto provides birthing services and pre-and-post natal assistance to women and families, including those who are facing financial difficulties. The autoclave will enable Mamatoto to sanitize equipment on site instead of paying for disinfection services at another institution; therefore, it is hoped that Mamatoto will expand and widen their support. Lastly, he indicated that all life is precious and nobody should be deprived of basic amenities and care due to poverty. In this respect, he commended Mamatoto’s support of all women and families.

Attached are pictures of the ceremony which may be resized and distributed.

The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, all with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.
